Maytag’s Legacy
The Maytag Washing Machine Company was originally founded by Frederick Louis Maytag. His previous business venture was in co-founding Parsons Band-Cutter & Self Feeder Company in 1893, which produced threshing machines for farm work.
The original Maytag washing machine debuted in 1907. Dubbed the “Pastime,” these washers used a wooden tub carved from cypress, an extremely hard and naturally water resistant wood. The machine was operated by a hand crank connected to an internal dolly that would rub the fabric against a grooved interior. A pulley could be used to run the machine from a tractor or windmill. In 1911, the Pastime was first updated with an electric motor, and in 1919, Maytag pioneered the invention of the aluminum washer tub which resolved many of the leaking and rotting issues common to the previous models.
Always a presence in American home appliances, in April of 2006, Maytag joined the Whirlpool Corporation.
