During this frigid and icy holiday season, nothing is better than curling up by the fireplace with your family, sharing conversations, making memories, and enjoying the holidays to the fullest. Many of us at Cody’s have started putting our fireplaces into use as well, and as fireplaces get used more constantly this time of the year, we feel it is our responsibility to give our customers some tips to make these wonderful additions to our homes safe and worry-free:

How to Maintain Your Gas Fireplace

Use the Smoke Screen: All gas fireplaces should have a protective screen over the glass. Screens reduce risks of serious burns by creating a barrier that prevents skin from coming into direct contact with the hot glass. Keep in mind, however, that screens can also retain heat, so touching them isn’t advised.

Use Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, poisonous gas that can be deadly. For safety reasons, every home should have at least one CO detector located in rooms near gas appliances, including fireplaces.

Have Annual Maintenance Done:
Have a gas technician or hearth dealer perform maintenance on your gas fireplace annually. He or she will check the gas lines, clean the burner and control compartment, and check for condensation. This is an important yearly appointment that shouldn’t be delayed.

Direct Vent is Best:
When choosing a gas fireplace, opt for a direct vented model. They have sealed combustion systems protect indoor air quality by drawing air from outside the home for the fire, while expelling 100 percent of combustion exhaust and by-products outside the home.

Many gas fireplace owners don’t realize that annual fireplace maintenance is not just for wood burning fireplaces, but gas fireplaces as well. Remember that we at Cody’s Appliance not only fix Gas Fireplace issues, we perform maintenance too. If you haven’t had your fireplace checked this year, be sure to do so right away as your fireplace will become even more needed as the temperatures continue to drop. We want to keep your fireplace the highlight of your home this winter, so don’t put off getting your gas fireplace maintenance done, call us today!
