A Brief History of Emmett, ID
Community is a valued by most Americans, and nowhere else does the neighborly spirit flourish better than in a place like Emmett, Idaho. Here, you will find a populace of hard-working individuals who’ve taken that sense of community and molded into a thriving venue for both professional and social interaction.
The natural county seat for Gem County, Idaho, Emmett is overlooked by the towering Squaw Butte, an immense mountain range favored by the Native Americans for its beauty. Permanent settlement of the area began in 1860 after the discovery of gold at the Boise Basin, bringing prospectors from across the country through the routes established by fur traders and wayfaring travelers. By 1902, the Idaho Northern Railroad had expanded to the valley to ease the difficulty of traveling to the region. However, in only a few short years, the mines were closed down and the influx of people abated. Power lines were then extended to Emmett and a series of irrigation projects began to turn the valley into productive farmland. Dubbed the “Valley of Plenty” by local farmers for the soil’s impressive fertility, the region quickly gained fame for its vibrant produce and joyous spring festivals.
The rise of the farming industry in Emmett has given it a sustainable system of production that has helped growth immensely. In just the last year, Emmett has had more than 10 ribbon cuttings for businesses expanding to the area, adding new public health services, gym, and food operations to its budding economy.
